Almost summer holidays

It is getting really heated up in Tokyo this month is all low 30s, next month will be high 30s near 40. I've handed in an assignment and did one exam, one more to go plus research that I have to do the end of the year plus learning Japanese at home will keep me busy.

Besides a 5 dap camp in August I don't really have any plans, I was going to do some travelling but it is way too hot, I don't think I would enjoy it anyway. Instead I'm thinking of picking up a part time job and saving my money for travel in Winter.

Hokke no Nitsuke

So I've been testing out a new way to make fish and also Miso soup.

The fish that I most commonly like using is Hokke in Japanese, Arabesque greenling in English. Ive tried various ways kombu sake broth, dashi broth with miso glaze but I think this cooking method is really cool though I don't want to cook it too often incase I consume too much soy sauce. It's called Nitsuke which means to cook fish or vegetables in soy sauce, the mixture I used was really easy to make.

2 tablespoons sake brought to a boil for a short while to get the strongest alcohol smell out
1.5 tablespoons soy sauce
1.5 tablespoons mirin
1/3 cup of dashi soup stock

bring the broth to a simmer put this fish in and leave to cook on medium heat for about 3 minutes, then low heat for 15.

I think this broth gives a taste that isn't too strong and complements this fish I like it.

I've also been looking for different healthy things I can add to Miso to make it more flavoursome. My current favourite list is Aburaage tofu (which is like thin fried tofu), of course some thinly cut negi (shallots), ginger :D and Enoki musrooms (thin, long-stemmed white mushrooms with a small mushroom head). I did a quick wiki search and they contain antioxidants and a good source of protein apparently. Anyway I really like their texture and taste in Miso soup so yeah big fan lately.

Other than this I had prayer meeting yesterday and we went Gusto for dinner, actually got home at midnight funny prayer meeting huh. Gusto is like a chain restaraunt and unfortunately for my buck I got a few different dishes lacking in the quantity side so I wasn't really full hahaha. There was western food available but for two reasons I am turned off to western food in Japan.
a) eating Japanese food mostly of course which is homemade has made me thinner, I don't think I've actually lost weight though, kinda strange. I might be losing muscle mass, but I don't feel weaker...dunno
b) I don't really like western food in Japan, it's just yeah, having tasted sushi here I would still eat the lower quality we often find in Australia, but the western food here just doesn't excite me at all hahaha. It's quite expensive and if you go to a cheap western place it's usually just microwaved...so that's my opinion on that

week's been a bit of a drag with my assignment thats due monday I really need to finish it soon sigh....

First day back from mission

So mission has finished up! Those who want to know what happened can read the mission blog that I posted on a few times. http://mychestnutsoil.blogspot.com/

So today started off with me waking up early to do laundry i didnt eat breakfast because my stomach was feeling queasy from the mountain of meat I ate with the team at the last mission dinner. In total we mashed through 174 plates of thinly sliced beef, pork and chopped veges and mochi for 3500 yen a head (90 minutes all you can eat shabu shabu - kinda like hotpot and all you can drink soft drinks). After hanging out my laundry I boarded my trains for uni and rocked up to class only to find that a different class was in the room I normally had class in. To my confusion I consulted the class timetable to find out that it was in fact Monday and since I don't have any class on Monday I went home like a noob.

I spent most of the day cleaning my room and as I look at it now I'm quite happy with the result compared to the before, I have another big assignment due soon so that will be on my agenda for the time being. Let's pray I can be diligent with writing it.

Stay tuned :D
